Europe: USSR: Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev, at his dacha, is puzzled when he doesn't receive a phone call telling him that the launch of Voskhod 1 was successful. He calls the cosmonauts and has a live conversation with them on Soviet Central Television; USSR: Leonid Brezhnev telephones Nikita Khrushchev at his dacha and asks him to return to Moscow to urgently discuss agricultural policy and some other matters.
The space race: The USSR launch Voskhod 1, the first capsule to carry more than one person. The three cosmonauts don't use space suits as the capsule is pressurised - another first - and return safely after 16 orbits
